Melissa Colombo - Dietitian

Melissa is a Senior Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) specialising in women’s and paediatric dietetics. After completing her Bachelor of Biomedical Science (2003), first class honours (2004), Melissa followed a Masters of Nutrition & Dietetics (MND) at Flinders University in 2005. With nearly two decades of clinical expertise in tertiary hospitals including a decade at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, as well as the Royal Adelaide Hospital and the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, she has dedicated her career to transforming the health outcomes of mothers, babies, and children through her compassionate, non-judgemental approach and best practice nutritional guidance.
Melissa can provide children’s feeding guidance for nutritional adequacy, to prevent deficiencies and support growth, oral and enteral (tube feeding) nutrition support across areas such as neonatology, gastroenterology (IBS, coeliac disease), allergy and intolerances, neurodivergence or sensory processing disorders, fussy or picky eaters, congenital conditions, disability (including NDIS plan or self-managed), or nutritional rehabilitation following illness.​
Melissa is passionate about giving your family the best start at life’s important chapters and can support women and families across their pregnancy journey including nutrition for fertility (individuals and couples), managing a healthy pregnancy (gestational diabetes, diabetes in pregnancy, nutritional adequacy in pregnancy, vegetarian diets, iron deficiency) and beyond. She is an experienced women’s health dietitian with proven expertise in research and lecturing in areas such as gestational diabetes and pregnancy nutrition. In 2025 Melissa founded Blossom Women’s and Family Dietetics to support women, children and families access quality professional nutrition support services in the community.

​Melissa can work with adults starting their pregnancy journey to improve health and fertility for the whole family, whether it be improving the nutritional quality of your eating, weight loss or supporting conditions such as insulin resistance or PCOS to improve fertility. Melissa offers sessions for couples to improve health and nutrition, ideally 3 months before conception.
Nutrition to support fertility and newly starting families

Infant nutrition (0-12 months)
Melissa can support your little one navigate any feeding or growth issues between birth to 12 months age. Whether it be monitoring growth and supporting breast or bottle feeding, tube feeding and weaning or starting solids. Melissa has specialised skills in supporting infants who were born premature and will work alongside your Paediatrician or Neonatologist.

Paediatric nutrition
(children to teenagers)
Melissa specialises in paediatric dietetics to support your child’s nutrition and growth from birth to 18 years. She can work with a variety of conditions including disability, rehabilitation nutrition support following illness or injury, neurodivergence including feeding challenges in ADHD, Autism, underlying medical conditions such as oncology, heart or lung conditions, gastroenterology conditions such as reflux, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), allergies or intolerances and coeliac disease, nutritional adequacy in vegetarian and vegan diets and manage nutritional deficiencies such as iron-deficiency anaemia. Melissa is also trained in SOS Approach to Feeding therapy and can work through fussy or picky eating to ensure that food and meals are nutritionally balanced, assist with expanding variety and make mealtimes less stressful for all. She can support your child in a fun, nurturing and engaging approach to make food and mealtimes less of a chore. Melissa takes cues from your child to support increasing variety through creativity and engagement.

Pregnancy nutrition
Melissa can work with you throughout your pregnancy journey for a healthy pregnancy from the critical time of organogenesis (the development of your baby's critical organs) in the first trimester through to your third trimester. She specialises in understanding challenges of certain conditions in pregnancy such as hyperemesis, twin pregnancies, vegetarian diets, iron-deficiency anaemia, diabetes in pregnancy (including gestational diabetes and pre-existing diabetes) or pregnancy following gastric banding or sleeve gastrectomy. After pregnancy, your body needs additional nutrition for healing and breastfeeding. Melissa can provide guidance and support to take the guess work out so that you can focus on these special moments with your newborn.

Women’s Health Nutrition
Meet with Melissa to optimise your diet and nutrition to help support hormonal health, manage the symptoms of PCOS, endometriosis or insulin resistance, IBS, healthy weight support and diet adequacy. She will work with you to find the best approach for you and your needs.

Melissa can support positive changes in nutrition and lifestyle for chronic disease management with a focus on the DASH/Mediterranean diet. She can support you with nutrition for the management of diabetes/ insulin resistance, weight management, reducing triglycerides and cholesterol, improving blood pressure to reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, stroke, or heart disease. She focuses on balance, variety and regaining energy and will work collaboratively with you to achieve your goals.

Preparing for Your Appointment
To help you get the most out of your first visit, there are a couple of things to do before you come in.

New Patient Form
After you book, you’ll receive a New Patient Information Form through HotDoc. If you’d rather not do it online, you can download the form here or arrive about 15 minutes early to complete it at our clinic.

Food Diary
Before your first session, please keep a simple 3-day food diary — ideally two weekdays and one weekend day.
This gives Melissa a clear picture of your usual eating habits so your advice can be as personalised as possible.

Consultation Fees and Rebates
If you have a Chronic Condition Management Plan or Eating Disorder Plan from your GP, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate for dietetic services. Your GP can advise whether this applies to you.
For private health rebates, most private health funds offer rebates for dietitian consultations. The rebate amount depends on your level of cover – please check directly with your fund for details.
