Skin Health Awareness This Summer

  • Feb 4
  • 2 min read

With Summer well underway, it’s a good time to check in on your skin.

Higher UV levels and more time spent outdoors can increase the risk of sun damage, and many people start to notice new spots or changes they may not have paid much attention to before. Checking your skin regularly, and having any concerns assessed early, is an important part of looking after your health.

A skin check with your GP involves examining your skin for any new or changing spots and discussing whether further assessment, monitoring, or treatment is needed. You might consider booking a skin check if you have noticed changes, have a large number of moles, have had significant sun exposure over the years, or spend a lot of time outdoors.

At Signal Health, several GPs have a special interest in skin cancer medicine, including Dr Patricia Montanaro, Dr Simon Hayward, Dr Valli N Subramanian and Dr Andrew Kellie.

How to Check Your Skin: The ABCDE Guide 🔍

Over summer, we have been sharing skin health information on our social media channels. One of these posts focuses on the ABCDE guide, a simple way to check your skin for signs of melanoma. More seasonal skin health reminders will be shared online in the months ahead.

The ABCDE guide includes:

  • A – Asymmetry: One half of the spot doesn’t match the other

  • B – Border: Irregular, notched or spreading edges

  • C – Colour: Uneven or multiple colours such as black, brown, red, blue, white or grey

  • D – Diameter: Spots that are getting bigger over time

  • E – Evolving: Any change in size, shape, colour, or appearance

More information about the ABCDE guide and how to check for signs of skin cancer is available via the

If you notice anything new or changing, or if you would like a full-body skin check, an appointment with your GP is a good place to start.
